Explorers/Network Hike & Cave in South Wales
This year 21 Claygate Explorers, Network & Leaders joined 32 Explorers and Leaders from the district for the annual Winter Activity Weekend. This year we stayed in the heart of the Brecon Beacons, South Wales at the Plas Dolygaer Scout Centre.
We arrived Friday night and it was soon lights out as Saturday was going to be an early start.
Saturday and it was a 6am start for those in charge of breakfast. There were 53 Explorers and leaders to feed and whilst this was being done the 7 walking groups were being briefed and their group kit distributed.
Once this was sorted it was time to leave and a variety of walking routes were planned depending on each groups abilities. A couple of the groups reached the top of Pen y Fan which at 2907ft is the highest point in South Wales. The weather was sunny but cold, unlike 2 years ago when it just rained and rained, and there was a light covering of snow on some of the tops.
Sunday 7am (a lie in for some!) and following breakfast the group was again split into 7 smaller groups but today 4 were going caving at the Summit Centre near Merthyr Tydfil and the other 3 would be walking in the local area.
